Artificial Intelligence in Practice: How 50 Successful Companies Used AI and Machine Learning to Solve Problems by Bernard Marr — Book Review

The continuously emerging field of artificial intelligence has grown and found its way into the modern business environment. The most significant new market trends to success, artificial intelligence and machine learning, are highlighted. This innovation will continue to provide organizations of all sizes, markets, and industries with creative solutions. AI is tossed around sometimes without being completely understood. Yet, despite the general lack of AI comprehension, its practical effects should be visible to all. This book is trying to provide us a list of 50 businesses and their reception of progress in AI implementation and application.

Fifty case studies are worth your time. It's all a 5-minute read, just like the famous Unilever and McDonald's and how they've implemented AI in the business as Marr gave examples of how Ai works in some industries and got a successful outcome. I will not list here all the 50 companies; however, I'll give you a few noteworthy examples:

1. NASA Civilian Space Program - NASA will launch the next Mars mission, and it faces the issue of the restricted bandwidth available to transmit information back to Earth. Another problem is the power constraint, and where it might be harmful to the mission to drop out of it at the wrong moment. AI use is as tricky as it is exciting. An extensive collection of sensors collects data, and AI is equipped to use the information to 'recognize irregular' data that could help escape the threat.

Objective findings are scarce, of course, so far and before the start of the mission - it will be the first explorer mission that relies on autonomous decision-making. Nevertheless, the value seems optimistic. Thanks to the implementation of Artificial intelligence, the rover can act almost spontaneously on details. It will make up its mind on the locations that should be researched, minimizing the risk of placing it at risk by waiting for time-consuming guidance from the Earth.

2. Infervision - A Chinese company that uses AI to identify lung cancer, the world's most fatal disease. Survival rates were higher when AI detects such cancer at an early stage.

3. Siemens - The German industrial company which sells machinery for transport. Surveillance cameras in the entire transport system will feed AI information and enable a railway system' digital twin 'model that will be used to predict factors that are likely to contribute to delays or deficiencies. It then helps to advise what can be done to respond or avoid delays happening in the first place.

A detailed summary, including some technical information as well as main learning summaries, is given by each case study:

  • Understand how the groundbreaking machine learning approaches solve real market problems
  • Explore how existing applications for artificial intelligence boost performance and increase productivity in different circumstances.
  • Expand your understanding of recent technical developments in AI
  • Gain insight into AI's future and its growing position in industry and market

As Marr says, it remains evident if AI is the most powerful technology accessible to humanity today.  Critics may suggest that if the infrastructure and a whole lot of innovative and creative minds will work day and night to find the same link in the chain that fits perfectly into the description of their problems, there will be no gains from AI.

What makes Marr's writing so unique is his capacity to unravel what matters to a non-technical reader in a few terms. A lack of technological know-how does not affect his writing as a reviewer from a bird's-eye viewpoint - it is not clear whether he completely understands the internal dynamics of machine learning and AI or if he has ever designed an artificial intelligence algorithm himself. The book does not cover the subjects in technical depth; instead, because it increases awareness of opportunities, the book is essential. The book also encourages a bridge between fields and industries through the introduction of case studies from a broad array of applications.

I enjoyed scanning through the examples. This book is generally a collection or documentation of a case study. There's so much learning as you can know how AI works and how other companies implement and maximize its benefits.
